Being the trustee of a self-managed super fund can be a challenging task at times, and most people need help at certain stages when running a SMSF, particularly when a decision, or strategy, requires financial advice.

The 2017 Vanguard and Investment Trends SMSF Report found that a record high 277,000 SMSFs reported having unmet advice needs in the areas of tax and super, retirement strategies and investment advice. This is from a total pool of 585,000 SMSFs.

The report found that SMSF trustees are looking for advisers who are able to comprehensively advise on their SMSF. This has been even more evident over the last year given the super reforms that came into effect from 1 July 2017. SMSF trustees have sought advice in order to understand how the reforms will affect them and whether they need to make any changes to their SMSF or superannuation strategy as a result.

Investment Trends Research Director, Mr Peker, said “Trustees are after someone who is able to help them across all their needs -they want an adviser who is an expert in handling SMSFs, someone they can trust, and who is able to address all of their needs.”

Traditionally, many Australians have turned to their accountant for assistance, but relatively new rules mean accountants must now be licensed to establish and winding up an SMSF, and provide advice about the suitability of an investment product or strategy for an SMSF. Under the new rules, unlicensed accountants are only able to assist trustees with basic SMSF administrative tasks and provide factual information about investments and strategies.

As a financial adviser I am authorised to provide comprehensive strategic and investment advice to SMSF trustees and have helped clients manage their SMSFs for many years now – from establishment to investment strategy to retirement planning and pension draw down.

Please get in touch if you are looking for an adviser who can advise on all facets of your SMSF.
